The U.S. Embassy has cancelled the restriction on Embassy personnel night movements, but has asked Embassy personnel to avoid large gatherings at restaurants and other public places. The area around Menelik Square will remain off-limits for Embassy personnel until further notice. U.S. citizens should consider implementing these policies as well. Please report anything suspicious to Djiboutian law enforcement by dialing 17 or to the U.S. Embassy at (+253) 21-453-000. After-hours, please call (+253) 77-87-72-29.
Review your personal and family security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, such as varying your routes and timing to work, school or other frequent destinations. Have a plan for how to contact your family and friends in case of an emergency. When dining or shopping out, please take special note of entrances and exits. If something or someone seems unusual or out of place, leave immediately. If you find yourself present during an attack or incident, immediately get to the ground and begin searching for an exit. If you are in the vicinity of an attack or incident, leave the area immediately and resist the urge to investigate; attacks sometimes include a second attack targeting first responders and curious bystanders
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Djibouti enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution and travel information, including Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information.
