Security Message for U.S. Citizens

Today is the last scheduled day of the campaign rallies before the national elections on April 8.  The following rallies are expected to bring in large crowds with possible road blocks.  Please avoid the following areas.

  • This morning, a campaign rally will take place at the Corniche (avenue George Pompidou) behind the old free zone near Coca Cola.
  • Later in the afternoon another rally will take place in the Hassan Gouled Stadium.  Venice road or port road could be blocked or congested.
  • Also, another major rally will take place in front of Camp Cheik Osman in Balbala.  The bridge near Camp Cheik will likely be blocked or congested.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Djibouti enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for up-to-date information on travel restrictions.
