Ceremony to Commemorate USAID’s Project to Support Civil Society Engagement in Djibouti’s Local Development Process

Djibouti, September 13, 2023 – A ceremony marking the official announcement of the signature of four Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Project to Support Civil Society Engagement in Djibouti’s Local Development Process took place at the Sheraton Hotel in Djibouti-City: USAID’s implementing partner The Kaizen Company signed MOUs with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Women and Family, the Deputy Ministry of Decentralization, and the National Union for Djiboutian Women. The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations to better collaborate with local authorities.

The Project to Support Civil Society Engagement in Djibouti’s Local Development Process is a four-year, $10,000,000 project that began in November 2021. It is funded by the U.S. government through USAID. The goal of the project is to strengthen partnerships between regional council officials and local communities by supporting civil society organizations to achieve the civic space and organizational capacity necessary to operate effectively. The activity aims to accomplish three major goals:

  1. Strengthened enabling environment for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
  2. Increased capacity and effectiveness of CSOs to collaborate and coordinate with each other and with the local authorities around service delivery.
  3. Gender-based violence prevention and mitigation promoted with special emphasis on female genital mutilation.
